The first Apple computer came out in 1976 and has gone through many changes and upgrades over the last 45 years.
Though you may be chastised for saying anything negative about a Mac by a Mac loyalist, one thing is for sure…they all start slowing down eventually.
Your Mac running slowly can be a real pain and take away time from your day. If you’re wondering how to make a Mac run faster, stick around and keep reading.
Why Is My Mac Running Slowly?
Is your Mac old? Sometimes they get too old to keep up with the newest version of macOS.
Could it be a hardware or software problem? Yes. One of the components of your Mac may not be working right or has failed.
Some apps or processes may be taking up a large portion of your Mac’s processor power.
Any of these issues may prevent the computer from running efficiently.
Getting rid of duplicate files on a Mac can free up storage space and help you optimize a Mac for faster running. Check out the reviews of some great apps that scan for duplicate files and remove them from your computer stat.
How To Fix It
When your Mac is running slowly, your best bet is to go through a process of elimination to figure out what’s making it drag.
Restart Your Computer
Restarting your Mac may help because when you do this, the memory clears and force reloads any processes that may have been hung up.
Your Mac should be up and running within a minute or two. If it takes longer than that, it may suggest that something is happening when loading macOS.
What’s Taking Up Processor Power?
To find out what’s keeping your Mac from running efficiently, look at the Activity Monitor. Go to Applications > Utilities. Click on the CPU tab and choose the % CPU drop-down to see which processes have the most usage.
Watch the Activity Monitor for a little while as the processes move up and down on the list. The ones that are slowing down your Macbook will stay near or at the top.
A window pops up with the option to quit or force quit the process.
Free Up Space
When your drive space is close to full capacity, your computer runs slowly. It’s time to free up some space on the startup disk.
Go to the Apple icon and choose About This Mac. Click the Storage tab. Use the Manage button to free up space by managing your storage.
Ready to Get Your Mac Back?
Now that you know the reasons for your Mac running slowly, you can try some of the options to fix it. If none of these fixes work for you, consider taking it to the Genius Bar at the Apple store.
